Wiring in a USB cable??

I have a TomTom 3 GPS setup in my car. The GPS receiver sits on my dash and has a dual charge cable which powers the GPS receiver and the PDA. The cable runs behind the dash and plugs into my cigarette lighter through a USB to cigarette lighter adaptor.

Has anybody tried wiring the USB cable directly into the car, does anyone know if/how this might work??

You'd still need some sort of voltage converter as usb is regulated 5v and ur car electrics are un-regulated 12v.
You could wire another cig lighter (mikey the mini does an adapter i think) and plug another cig lighter to usb into that and hide it all behind the dash somewhere.
